10 Years of Meditating

I started meditating in 2012, when Headspace was launched. What are the useful things that I’ve gotten out of doing something for 10 years?

Throughout this time, I tried all kinds of apps, such as Insight TimerCalmTen Percent HappierWaking Up, Oak. I went to a 10 day silent retreat, virtual retreats, even in-app retreats. I experienced Vipassana, Metta, Maraṇasati, Mantra …

Meditation was a habit, a nuisance, a sanctuary, a chore. I never stopped and resumed and paused and started. I was never clear and concerned and convinced and confused.

In the end, after 10 years of sitting and doing nothing, I came down with 4 things that I have found most meaningful:

1. “Wholehearted cooperation with the inevitable”, and “not mind what happens”

2. Focus on doing the next most appropriate thing

3. “Not knowing is most intimate”

4. Life is practicing. So, “begin again”
